The Barnstaple Concert Band has a long and varied history which dates back to before 1900 and believed to have been associated with the Royal North Devon Yeomanry Band. After the First World War it reformed under the name of the Old Comrades Band eventually becoming the Barnstaple Town Military Band. Around 1922 the 6th Battalion Devonshire Regiment Territorial Army Band was formed and eventually absorbed many of the young players of the Barnstaple Town Military Band. The Band continued until the outbreak of the Second World War and at the end of hostilities in 1945 a group of the original members reformed the Band under the name of the Royal British Legion and Barnstaple Town Band. In the 1980’s the name was shortened to the Barnstaple Concert Band
Today the Band performs concerts throughout North Devon under the musical direction of Mr Graham Lacey and is made up of musicians from all walks of life. Its longest serving member is Mr Roy Slade who has been a member of the Band for 60 yrs.
The Band supports the Barnstaple Town Council and Royal British Legion for their civic parades along with providing concerts to support various local charities.
Recently a Junior Band has been established with the help from experienced Band members to provide free musical tuition to help ensure the continued existence of the Band.
